The Responsible Drug Disposal Act of 2010, provides Americans with safe, environmentally sound ways to dispose of unused or expired prescription drugs. This is a congressional approval for all 50 states to engage in creating safe and efficient ways for citizens to dispose of unused prescription drugs
Many of our municipalities now allow residents to discard their unwanted or unused medicines in special locked boxes any time these special prescription drop sites are open. Residents do not need to complete forms or answer questions about the items they drop off.
The DEA and other law enforcement agencies working in collaboration with one another at disposal sites around the country reports huge turnouts of people clearing their medicine cabinets of unused or unwanted drugs.
This initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. Every day, on average, 2,500 teens use prescription and over the counter drugs to get high for the first time, according to the Partnership for a Drug-Free America. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet.
The more Rx drug drop sites we develop, the safer our youth and our communities become. Oklahoma County has been a viable part of this initiative by creating several Rx drug drop sites around the county.
